nominee for a big high profile national security job for this white house who president obama reportedly initially wanted, but who also backed off from was this guy, john brennan. this was john brennan with president obama when president obama first took office. john brennan was reportedly president obama's choice to lead the cia after he first became president in his first term. john brennan had been a career cia figure. he had served as chief of staff to george tenet when george tenet under george bush developed their torture and secret prison program. john brennan's association with the torture and secret prison program of the george bush era of the cia is what sunk his chances for being picked as director of the cia at the start of the obama presidency. it's kind of weird. it's almost a con foreign concept in american modern politics that the left might block something from happening, but it's true. liberals thought obama stopping the torture program wasn't enough. that people tarred by association with that program should not be promoted, that there should be political accountabilit

responding, reacting to this national tragedy that i think president obama has adequately described as broken all of our hearts, and in every funeral that has taken place, for those 20 innocent children and six innocent adults in the school districts, and school administrators, we obviously have shared in that very tragic event, all of us. it has touched everybody across this country. san francisco is no different. and i have shared that emotional experience with the supervisor and everybody here, in our law enforcement, and in our health department as well. the question for us, then, is what do we do about it? and not only can we share in this tragedy and signal our sympathies to the families as we've done, but we've got to do something more. and this is where i want to make sure i recognize all of the people that are in that effort of doing something about it, including the officials in san francisco. and some have been at this longer than others to try to do something about it, have reached limitations. yet again, i think this tragedy at sandy hook reminds us that we've got to keep trying

announced by president obama. now on to the top expert on national security. i want to ask you one more question about hagel before we move on to brennan. he has talked about cutting defense spending to a reasonable level. i feel there is some chance he could do it better than a democrat like panetta could. it seems to me that the democrats have to constantly have to prove what tough guys they are whereas a republican like hagel might be freeing to say these are reasonable cuts that we can make. is there some validity to that? >> i think there is a hell of a lot of validity to that. and he can say i have been in a war. i know how much war costs and i know how money is wasted in the course of a war. he can make a strong pitch that we really do not need in the budget a large defense as the rest of the world. this is extreme. most americans do not know. america has an as much money spent on defense as all the other countries in the world combined. that is not necessary. >> cenk: that is an amazing fact. do we have any idea if the defense contractors behind the scenes are opposed to hagel?

on waiting for obama to get re-elected? >> i think that's definitely a big issue. you know, looking at the picks that the president announced yesterday for national security team, i think what you are seeing is obama administration sort of trying to reshape how they think about things and drawing down the war in iraq, u.s. troop presence there, i got off a white house conference call. you're looking at now a pentagon and a white house that's sort of thinking about conflict s differently. using drones and lethal force in that way rather than full scale war, escalating in a country and a war and that will continue the criticism that the white house is secretive about the drone program. they don't talk about it and almost don't acknowledge it and clear that the president is committed to this and an issue from the left. >> david, as s.e. said, i think the left did not for most or all of president obama's first term really hold him accountable on drones the way maybe you would have expected them to do or tried to with the national security policies under george w. bush. it seem there is'
